Black History Month at HWC

Black History Month was commemorated this year at City Colleges of Chicago, with numerous events at HWC held throughout the month.

Regardless of being Black, celebrating Black History Month is important, according to the Black Student Union president at HWC.

"It celebrates diversity, and it's about coming together, not only if you’re Black," said Black Student Union President Yidedya Kedir, encouraging students of all races to celebrate Black History Month.

Kedir is encouraging other HWC students to consider joining the Black Student Union as well, regardless of their ethnic background. According to Kedir, the organization provides a space where students from different backgrounds can unite and engage with each other.

"Although I’m not black, I see my friends feel more empowered and feel proud," said Daniel Andade.

Many students exclude themselves from the conversation because they are not Black, but this is even more reason to be a part of it, according to some at HWC.

"When one problem arises for one group, it affects everyone," said Professor of African American Studies Shanina M. Thomas. The Black community should be an issue for everyone, especially in such a diverse city as Chicago.

During a speech given during Black History Month and hosted by the Black Student Union, Professor Thomas stressed the importance of education about Black history.

"Understand and appreciate the experience, the knowledge of those who came before us. Those who have had to endure such hardships that we, as future generations, have a responsibility to return the favor by acknowledging," said Thomas.
