Managing Finals

As our students finished up midterms this semester, they can now feel a sense of relief. Many students forget to take care of themselves as they stay up late studying and cramming material from the semester and prepare for their exams.
Losing motivation to study class material can get exhausting.
Alejandra, a Harold Washington College student, tells us how she was able to keep that motivation going.
“I went to coffee shops to study to get out of the same environment, I also gave myself 3 hours a day to dedicate to studying,” said Alejandra.
Alejandra also said that she had many ways to destress such as shopping, watching her favorite shows, and spending time with friends.
Just like Alejandra, another HWC student Alex had multiple ways to keep that motivation going to get through midterms.
“I made sure to ask a lot of questions during class and make sure to do all the homework,” said Alex. “I played video games to help destress from all the studying. I also took the time to go out with friends and get my mind off of school.”
HWC Wellness Center Director Sushma Kher had some tips for the students of Harold Washington College. “I would also create some type of structure or schedule for themselves, regarding what they’re going to be doing to prepare for the finals,” said Kher.
Kher also went on to express the importance of students acknowledging that they might be taking more than one class this semester, making it a very stressful time.
Kher shared some of the past events the Wellness Center has hosted for finals.
“We don't have events related to finals as much as we would like to, but we do have open walk-in hours for students. So students are able to walk into the Wellness Center or come onto our Zoom to seek support during the time of finals,” said Kher.
