Student Union Gets Makeover

After being closed to students for a brief period in November, the student union basement lounge reopened with a fresh new look. 

Featuring cube couches, solo rocking chairs, HWC-branded tables, and bistro seating, the new lounge area offers a more diverse choice of seating. 

However, some students were divided on the new look. 

“Honestly, I like the new chairs, they’re more comfy than the old ones. It’s not so crowded now,” said Martha Guzman, 20-year-old student at HWC.

“It’s more open now, but I do miss how many tables there were, now there’s just an empty space. It looked more like a cafeteria before,” said 19-year-old Jaze Fierro.

The microwaves, vending machines, and TV used in the old lounge were kept in place, with a previously unused side room converted into a new space consisting of air hockey machines and more private seating space. 

Students who played against each other on the air hockey machines were met with glances from other students, as the plastic disk hitting the walls of the arcade game echoed loudly through the small room.

Two students, 19-year-old Jeffery Kelly and 20-year-old Brian Calhoun, danced synchronously to Ghosts by Michael Jackson on Just Dance before racing each other in Mario Kart on the lounge’s TV, with a Wii they brought from home. 

HWC’s media contact did not immediately return a request for comment in regards to possible costs associated with the project.
