SGA Shake-up

SGA Shake-up

The Student Government Association leadership saw major restructuring this semester as both student president and student vice president stepped down from their roles due to unfortunate circumstances.

Having been elected at the end of the Spring 2021 semester, the board consisted of President Molly “Jean” Buckler, Vice President Sonath Johnson, Secretary Carolina Aguilar-Torres, and Treasurer Evan Boyle.

Carolina Aguilar-Torres, former secretary, is now the acting student president.

When asked about their reasons for removing themselves from their administrative roles, Buckler and Johnson provided the following statements to The Herald.

“It's pretty boring; I accepted a full time job so the only time I’ll have for meetings and such is after 6 p.m. weekdays,” said Buckler.

Johnson was candid in her response to questions about her decision to resign.

“The reason I stepped down as vice president is because I have been suffering from severe fibromyalgia pain for the last eight years and I am in the process of getting into a program for that pain. I let my grades slip from these flares that I experienced, but as soon as I’m well again, I’ll be back and running for SGA once again,” said Johnson

The current board is as follows: Carolina Aguilar-Torres, president; Nancy Barrera, vice president; Stephanie Saenz, secretary and Evan Boyle, treasurer.

Evan Boyle will remain as treasurer, the only position not seeing unexpected change.

Treasurer Boyle also responded to The Herald’s questions about the recent board developments.

“SGA is a time consuming experience as we try to hold events for students and help clubs with their events. Because of the time needed to be active in SGA it can sometimes get in the way of other, more important things for students who are a part of it,” said Treasurer Boyle.

“Jean got a new job that unfortunately conflicts with SGA, so she had to step down. She was a great president with a lot of vision so I am sad to see her go. Sonath had to step down to focus on academic pursuits. While I did not get to work with Sonath as much as Jean, she was amazing to work with when she was with SGA,” Treasurer Boyle added.

The SGA hosts general meetings bi-weekly on Fridays at 2:45 p.m. via Zoom. You can stay abreast of any other events it may be hosting via the HWC Student Activities Center on Brightspace or weekly emails from washingtonannouce.
